Issue #01: An Invitation to Welcome a Little Magic into Your Life
Exploring the art of noticing what’s good.
October holds a special kind of magic in my world. First and foremost, it’s my birthday month and I’ve never quite grown out of the childlike wonder of having a birthday. More than that, though, it’s the vibe. There’s an energy to this month that comes with the drop in temperature, the crisping of leaves, and warm spices scenting the air.
Because it’s my birthday month, I always find myself drawn to new projects as if it’s my own personal New Year with resolutions to be made. Last year it was buying this very Casual Magic domain; this year it’s actually doing something with Casual Magic.
So, what exactly is “casual magic”?
I like to think of it much in the way that we think of glimmers—micro-moments of joy. It’s a perfectly ripe peach on a summer’s day, or the elusive perfect hair day, the weight of a warm cat snuggled beside you as you read a new book, and most definitely prisms reflecting rainbows across the wall. It’s purely and simply the little things.
Early readers are probably going to be my friends and family, so you’ll likely know that I’m plagued by a few extremely annoying chronic illnesses that have taken over my life. I’m nothing if not tenacious when it comes to trying to figure out how to best these illnesses and get back to some sort of acceptable normal. In the midst of doctor appointments, procedures, experimenting with new medications, and existing through flares, seeking casual magic has become imperative to my inner joy.
I want to notice these moments with you, so I do hope you’ll subscribe! *Unlike many other newsletters these days, this one is free.
Other things you’ll see here are my creative projects, philosophical musings, and pictures of my weirdo cats. You’re also going to hear about beans. It’s a whole thing, but more on that another time.
For now, here are a few of my birthday traditions:
Starting my day just before the time I was born (8:45 am) so I can experience turning a new age.
Listening to Lithium by Nirvana. I’ve been doing that since high school and it feels so right!
Al Noor (my favorite Pakistani restaurant) for dinner.
Swedish Princess Cake, made from scratch by my fiancé.
Do you have any birthday traditions? I’d love to know!
Stay shiny!
Jen
